The Journey: A Novel of Pilgrimage and Spiritual Quest

by Elyn Aviva

". . . like a Dan Brown book (The DaVinci Code), but not as exhausting." Anna Noori West

Excerpt from the book:

Myrddin looked around the room. "Now is the time to call upon the ancestors who have gone before you, to think of dear friends who have departed. Let them come to you now, let them be present for just a moment on this All Hallow's Eve."

Hesitantly at first, but soon gaining in strength, people began to call out the names of ancestors and friends. Their voices became plaintive, permeated with longing for those who were no longer with them. I could almost imagine the souls of the departed standing outside the house, peering through the windows as best they could, tapping on the rattling glass, eager but unable to join us.

Who would I ask to join us, I thought through the haze, a haze brought on both by the smoke from the poorly kept fire and by the impact of the queimada liquor. Who would I ask, I wondered? No one. Let the departed stay departed, I thought with a shiver. That's where they belonged.

We passed our cups back to Myrddin and he refilled them again and again. Santiago played another haunting tune on the gaita and then another, and people whispered stories to each other or stared pensively into the fire.

Gradually the room filled with the memories, if not the spirits, of the departed ones.

Suddenly, I felt a little woozy. I stood up, intending to go to the outhouse. And then it happened.

As I steadied myself against the table, I accidentally glanced into the punchbowl. Although I knew that the queimada was no longer burning, when I looked into the bowl it seemed to be filled with iridescent flames that licked and flickered across the surface, like early morning mist rising off a lake. Suddenly the flames disappeared and a small figure appeared in the bowl.

The figure was crouched against a tree. I couldn't tell if it was male or female, but it was dressed in what I supposed were masculine clothes: a hooded cloak, a short tunic, leggings, and crude leather shoes. The figure was trying to make itself as unobtrusive as possible, practically burrowing into the thick underbrush. Suddenly a heavyset man stepped up beside the crouching form and grabbed it by the nape of the neck, lifting it up off the ground. The hood fell back, revealing close-cropped, curly red hair.

I will never forget the look of terror on that face. I leaned forward, compelled beyond all reason to try to help.

The Journey begins on the Camino de Santiago and ranges across Spain, France, and Turkey. It is the tale of Gwen, a young American pilgrim, who is confronted by a vision that won't leave her alone. Driven by the deep longing of her soul, Gwen embarks on an archetypal journey that includes modern-day Druids, a quest for the Grail, the labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral, the Forest of Broceliande, Black Madonna shrines, and Sufis in Istanbul. Along the way she finds wise teachers and charlatans, true love and its imitations. Her search for meaning leads her, eventually, to discover who she really is.

"A fascinating, well-written book that is difficult to put down. In the tradition of The Celestine Prophecy and The Alchemist, Elyn Aviva takes a very spiritual journey and makes it approachable to everyone in fiction form." —Melissa Powell

"Not only does Elyn Aviva tell a wonderful tale, she shares with us multiple cultures and allows us to experience a new world."--Celeste Bonde

"The book takes the reader into an experiential knowing of God and speaks to the commonality people of all religious faiths share in their spiritual journeys."--Marlene Moody

". . . I loved this! I could hear the sounds, smell the smells, feel the atmosphere of the places that Gwen went to. It was like I was actually with her on her spiritual quest."--Devi Tide

"The reader, like Gwen, the protagonist, is invited to look beneath the surface of events to discover deeper meaning, complexity, and paradox. Aviva's book is a welcome addition to spiritual journey literature." --Rev. Jane E. Vennard

"Elyn Aviva has created a magical, mystical quest--from the medieval end of the world in Spain, to Breton forests filled with Arthurian legends, to ancient Goddess sites and whirling dervishes in Turkey." --Kathy Gower, Ph.D.

"On one level, this romp across time is an entertaining adventure. On another, it becomes an occasion, for all who dare, to dive into uncharted worlds of inner discovery. . . . This is a journey of the soul, an adventure of the heart, a discovery of companionship that, in the end, is the journey of life itself." --Brad Berglund

"Gwen is lost and confused. Her life is a mess, and she is seeking something else. But what? This is her story, as she takes a journey across Europe in search of her Grail—whatever that proves to be! But it is far more than that. It is a journey to her spiritual awakening,(more . . .) --Christine Cleere
