Robert Finley’s interest in natural history began with collection of reptiles and amphibians for exchange with the San Diego Zoo. He learned more serious field methods as a member of the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley expedition of 1936. After graduating from the University of California, the author served as a naval aviator in World War II. He then earned a Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, becoming an authority on wood rats. During the Korean War he returned to the Navy as Head of the Scientific Unit of the Office of Naval Intelligence. He began his career as a research biologist in the Fish and Wildlife Service by pioneering field studies on the effects of insecticides and other environmental impacts on wildlife. He later served as Chief of the section of ecology on public lands. Finley has done field work in nearly all parts of the United States and promoted the importance of museums for documenting changes in our fauna. He published many scientific papers on mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife, in the areas of ecology, systematics, and biogeography—fields of primary importance in evolution. |
