Allen Young
Allen Young
was born in Washington, D.C. July 4, 1918. He moved to Denver in
1947 where he joined The Denver Post and in September 1948 became music
critic, reviewing theater and film events and records. He did a record review
program on classical radio station KFML from 1953 to 1957. He left The Post
in 1957, and later that year created The Lively Arts, which he published
and edited for two years before going to Cervi’s Journal where he edited
the arts pages from 1959 to 1963. From 1963 until 1970 he served as executive
Director of Young Audiences, Inc. From 1972 until 1980 he was Associate Editor
of the Rocky Mountain Medical Journal for the Colorado Medical Society.
Allen has written for Time magazine, Life magazine, The Los
Angeles Times, Opera News, and Musical America. A weekly columnist in
The Daily Journal from 1967 to 1972, he wrote on environmental matters.
From 1984 until 1987 he was music reviewer for the Rocky Mountain News
and did occasional reviews for that paper until 1996. From 1963 until October
2004 he was Denver correspondent for Variety magazine. In 1993 Allen
published a history of opera in Central City.
